Welcome

This website is a mish mash of stuff that goes on in my life. I write it primarily for myself as a way of documenting and learning. If others benefit from it in any way that's great. View the categories to see the kind of areas I'm interested in and by all means contact me, I love hearing from people.

Volvo Ocean Race

Posted by: admin | Comments (1)

I am lucky enough to be living in (well near) Galway city as I complete a Masters degree at the University.  Everyone knows by now that the Volvo Ocean Race is in town. Galway has never looked better, the docks look amazing, the old city looks amazing, the Claddagh looks amazing – etc etc. I was lucky enough to be given a vip pass to the civic reception last Sunday night where the officials met the skippers infront of Cowen, Cullen et al but that didn’t spoil it – don’t worry. Actually John Killeen was there too as the main driving force behind the entire event, much loved locally he got a great cheer and rightly so.

I was back in town today and took a walk down around the docks in the glorious sunshine. It was like being in Monte Carlo. The place is buzzing with stands, stalls, bands, boats, carnivals, street performers, food, racing and lots of beautiful people (and a few not so beautiful). Just being on the docks today made me smile for the afternoon ad I wasn’t the only one.

Mizen to Malin cycle start date announced

Posted by: admin | Comments (0)

I’m hoping to kick-off on 7th June.

I pray to god that the weather is kind. Rain is a problem but the biggest issue is any kind of head wind. A stiff breeze in your face can literally double the effort required to get form a to b. When I decided to go from north to south, I did so based on  information from the met office about prevailing winds. It seems that the averages suggest south westerly breezes but you can be unlucy. The  planned route is ….

  • June 7th – Mizen Hd to Kenmare
  • June 8th – Kenmare to Listowel
  • June 9th – Listowel to Cliffs of Moher
  • June 10th – Cliffs of Moher to Galway
  • June 11th – Galway to Charlestown
  • June 12th – Charlestown to Ballyshannon
  • June 13th – Ballyshannon to Letterkennny
  • June 14th – Letterkenny to Malin Hd

Fundraising is going ok and currently standing at around €600. SVP are now fully behind the event and have engaged their PR company (Walsh PR) who will arrange some publicity along the lines of print media and radio etc. I will hopefully be doing some live radio interviews along the route.

Right now I’m in the process of organising accomodation. I have been in touch with several b&b’s and hostels. Some of them are kindly offering to help which is great they’ll definately be getting a good old plug on any radio interview I do not to mention full credit on the blog.

I need to start thinking about the kit I’ll need to bring. I want to keep weight to a minimum so no luxuries such as changes of clothes etc. I may have to invest in panniers for the bike and a decent weather proof jacket.

Ways to sponsor me

  1. Online with credit/debit card here
  2. Pledge funds via my contact form here
  3. Post cheque/PO to
    Kieran Stafford
    C/O Mary Delaney

Mizen Head to Malin Head Cycle

Posted by: admin | Comments (1)

m2mcycle_smallDear Friends,

In early June I am cycling from Mizen Head to Malin Head (from the most southerly tip of Ireland to the most northerly).  I am doing this solo over a period of about a week. I would like to use the effort to raise funds for St Vincent De Paul. These guys do incredible work with people caught in the poverty trap, the elderly and those who are struggling with life.

I have set up a fund raising page here – http://www.mycharity.ie/event/m2mcycle

You can donate using Credit/Debit cards or you can give me cash/cheques etc. I am asking for your help, any donation you can afford would be so gratefully accepted. Every euro raised will motivate me when I’m struggling up a hill in the pouring rain with 557km to go. Maybe you could also spread the word among your classmates, colleagues, friends, family. I’ll take anything from anyone.

As I said above, I plan to kick off in early June, the precise date is somewhat dependant on weather. If the forecast is awful, I will move the start date strategically – but regardless, I will do this cycle!  I will use hostels en-route and will cover all my expenses entirely from my own personal funds, so every donation made will go entirely to the charity. I hope to post a daily diary / update here on the website, if you want to track my progress. If anyone wants to join me for a short stint of the journey – you’d be more than welcome.

My planned route is roughly……

Mizen Hd – Kenmare (87 km)
Kenmare – Listowel (92 km)
Listowel – Cliffs of Moher (87 km) via Tarbert/Killimer Ferry
Cliffs of Moher – Galway (79 km)
Galway – Charlestown (94 km)
Charlestown – Ballyshannon or Donegal town(90 km)
Ballyshannon – Letterkennny (71 km
Letterkenny – Malin Hd (74 km)

I will try to avoid main roads as much as possible so the route will probably end up being considerably longer. I hope to average 100km per day. I have been training for the past few weeks doing 20-40km spins in the evening and taking part in various tours around the country. So I should be ok fitness wise but it will be a test of endurance especially in the Irish weather not to mention the fact that I’m doing this alone.

An Post Tour of Sligo

Posted by: admin | Comments (0)

IMAG0118 Sunday 10th May turned out nice. Just as well as I had made the journey all the way out west to cycle in the Tour of Sligo. Well actually I travelled the day before and stayed with my old neighbours Gardiner’s Tower Hill B&B.  After a nice bite to eat in Bistro Bianconi with friends and family on Saturday night, it was up early and off round the most scenic parts of Ireland on the push bike. The route took in Lough Gill, Dromahair, Ballintogher, Knocknarea, Strandhill etc so it was non stop scenery. The event was a huge success attracting over 700 cyclists – especially considering this was the first year it was run. It was great to be back in Sligo. I used to love living there and still miss the  place
